About Alonnisos National Marine Park

Established in 1992, Alonnisos National Marine Park encompasses a vast marine area around the islands of Alonnisos, Skopelos, and surrounding islets in the Northern Sporades archipelago of Greece. It protects approximately 2,260 square kilometers of the Aegean Sea, including rare and endangered marine species such as the Mediterranean monk seal, sea turtles, dolphins, and diverse fish populations. The park’s geography features rocky coastlines, sea caves, underwater reefs, and crystal-clear waters, creating ideal habitats for wildlife and rich biodiversity. Significant terrestrial environments on the islands include pine forests, oak groves, and traditional villages, preserving cultural heritage alongside natural resources. Popular recreation activities include kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, boat tours to secluded beaches and caves, birdwatching, and hiking on well-marked trails with panoramic views. The park’s strict regulations limit commercial fishing and prohibit harmful activities, contributing to the recovery of key species and healthy marine ecosystems. Visitors can explore quaint coastal towns, local tavernas, and historical sites while enjoying protected beaches. The marine park is also involved in research, environmental education, and conservation campaigns, emphasizing sustainable tourism without disturbing wildlife. Its appeal lies in offering an unspoiled marine wilderness where visitors can connect closely with nature both above and below the water’s surface amid Greece’s iconic island setting.
